Paper Talk: Choosy Jewell eyeing Brown

Hungary midfielder Lisztes spent two days training with Latics last week following his release by German club Werder Bremen.

But Jewell opted not to have a longer look at the international who has now set his heart on playing in Spain.

He won't be signing Neaga either, despite some hard work by the striker's agent to push him towards the JJB Stadium.

A close friend of disgraced former Chelsea star Adrian Mutu, Neaga is currently playing in South Korea and was strongly linked in the media with an £800,000 transfer to Wigan.

But Jewell told the Evening Post: "The lad's agent has been pushing him hard.

"We have made enquiries but I don't think we will be pursuing Neaga."

As for Lisztes, who has 49 caps for Hungary, Jewell said: "We had a look at him on trial for a few days but he wasn't what we were looking for. We didn't pursue the interest at all."

Lisztes, 29, appeared to suggest a deal was on the table for him at Wigan when he went public about his trial spell.

He said: "I wouldn't say the two days were useless because I had a chance to practice with a team, with proper physical training and I felt like I got something out of it.

"Although I felt good with Wigan, I don't think I would sign a contract.

"I've stressed many times that I dream of playing in Spain, and that's why I'm not in any hurry although the days I spent with Wigan were fruitful."

While Jewell won't be adding an Eastern European feel to his squad, he could have better luck in his reported chase for Tottenham midfielder Michael Brown.

He has shown a strong interest in the 28-year-old for quite a while and feels Brown would add some steel and experience to the engine room.

It's believed Spurs could be persuaded to sell, although the player may take some convincing to leave White Hart Lane and chance his luck at Latics.

Brown has been in and out of the Spurs side following his £1m move from Sheffield United in January last year.

And he could be pushed further down the pecking order if coach Martin Jol manages to recruit Guti from Real Madrid.

Meanwhile, the Latics players will get their first slice of competitive action of the summer tonight when they face Danish club Elite 3000.

The game is being played at their training camp near Copenhagen, the squad having arrived in Scandanavia on Sunday morning.

Jewell said: "The facilities here are first class and we're doing double training
sessions.

"Judging by the sessions we've done so far, the training has gone up a gear from an already excellent level."
