Paper Talk: Chin up

The Manager of the Month curse struck Jewell as he watched Latics slip to a shock 2-0 defeat to Plymouth Argyle at the JJB Stadium.

While he was disappointed to see Latics' 17-match unbeaten run come to an end, Jewell chose to praise his players for their form so far this term rather than dish out criticism.

He said: "We have been beaten but we're still three points better off than anyone else in this league.

"It might stop people saying ridiculous things about us running away with the league – that was never going to happen because football is a tough game.

"We have to be careful not to get too down about this result, after all we've just lost one game at home.

"Now we must look to bounce back and try and go on another unbeaten run.
"Nothing is ever decided in November, it's what happens over the nine or 10 months of the season which counts.

"There will be ups and downs along the way and Saturday's result was a bit of a down.

"It's important to realise that this is one defeat in 18 games and I think that puts things into perspective."

Jewell felt Plymouth were deserved winners, their compact defence and counter-attacking system working to perfection.

And he refused to blame injuries – Nathan Ellington missed the game with bruised ribs while Lee McCulloch left the ground on crutches after damaging his ankle in first half – or the recent hectic workload for the defeat.

He said: ""Nathan not playing and losing Lee during the game didn't help, but fair play to Plymouth, they set their stall out and once they scored, never looked like losing.

"If anyone was going to score again in the game, it was them and that is how the game turned out.

"We didn't win any of the battles all over the pitch, plenty of mistakes were made, and while I'm disappointed to have lost, I'm not going to be too hard on them.

"This is not the time to be having a go at our lads, instead it's right to say 'well done Plymouth'. Their 4-5-1 system was always going to be difficult to play against, and once they scored, we didn't have the craft, endeavour or energy to move them round.

"A header from Leighton Baines right at the final whistle was the only time we forced their keeper to make a save in the second half."

Latics face an anxious wait to learn the extent of the damage suffered by McCulloch following a midfield clash with David Friio.

He went straight to Euxton Hall Hospital for an X-ray and later returned to the ground on crutches and with his right ankle heavily strapped.

Jewell said: "It was a blow to lose Lee and it showed just how much we missed his strength and aerial ability.

"It's his ankle which is the problem and we'll have to see what the X-ray has shown up.

"As for the Duke, he got a nasty bang in the ribs at Stoke last week and while nothing is broken, he's badly bruised.

"He had a fitness test on Saturday morning but he wasn't fit.

"In the end we just had too many square pegs in round holes and looked a bit disjointed."
