Paper Talk: Cheque book closed

Two players he targeted to help secure a play-off place are unavailable at the moment.

And while there is a chance of a loan signing or someone coming in on a short-term contract, Jewell expects a fairly quiet time leading up to the Football League's 5pm cut-off point.

He doesn't foresee any outgoing trade either with him anxious to have sufficient numbers to cover for injuries and suspensions.

Jewell told the Evening Post: "I had two targets in mind who are not available and aren't going to be available for different reasons.

"I'm not for bringing players in just for the sake of it, they have to be better than what we have already got.

"The two I wanted to bring in, I thought would have improved the team, but it's not to be.

"If something becomes available which is attractive to us, maybe a loan, then we might do that because we haven't got a lot of numbers here.

"I often think that some deadline day buys can be a panic, although not always.

"But when teams bring in six or seven players, it is something of a nonsense.

"The two players I wanted could be available another time, but at the moment, it's not going to happen.

"While I tend to look at things long-term, sometimes you need to look in the-short term too.

"We brought Gareth Farrelly in short-term to see what can happen, and we might bring another loan in, I don't know.

"But I'm certainly not going to be spending money between now and Thursday.

"Of course we could suffer injuries and suspensions, leaving ourselves a bit short, but I have to make a calculated decision and live or die by that."

Jewell was keeping the identities of his two major targets under wraps, as is his usual policy when it comes to transfers.

At the weekend, a national newspaper linked the club with a pre-deadline swoop for Bournemouth skipper Carl Fletcher, a player equally at home in the centre of defence or midfield.

But the Cherries today denied having any contact with Latics about the 23-year-old.

Chairman Peter Phillips said: "I saw the speculation in the papers about Carl Fletcher, and as far as we know it is just another piece of newspaper talk.

"We have certainly had no approach from Wigan or anyone else."

Meanwhile, Latics midfielder Mike Flynn has had an X-ray on his foot after being injured in Saturday's win over Coventry.

It didn't show up any fracture and the club are hoping the damage is nothing more than heavy bruising.

Hobbling

Jewell said: "Flynny has been hobbling around on crutches after kicking the bottom of someone's boot in Saturday's game.

"It's pretty sore but I think he's milking it on the crutches actually."

Flynn, out of contract in the summer, has forced himself into first team contention recently, coming as substitute in the last three games.

Latics' home clash with Sunderland on April 24 has been chosen for live coverage on Sky (12.30pm kick-off).

The visit of the Black Cats, and the final home game of the season against West Ham on May 9, are both all-ticket affairs.
