Paper Talk: Buying frenzy

The final formalities of Camara's £3m move from Wolves were being completed today after the striker agreed personal terms and underwent a medical over the weekend.

In a flurry of transfer activity, a deal for former skipper Arjan de Zeeuw is close while negotiations are underway to sign Australian midfielder Josip Skoko from Turkish side Genclerbirligi.

That would bring the number of new signings to eight and manager Paul Jewell might not stop there before the transfer window shuts at the end of the month.

The deal for Camara was resurrected on Friday after his wage demands had seen Latics cool their interest earlier in the week.

Controversy has tended to follow the Senegal international about during his two years in British football, but Jewell hopes he can settle down and be a big hit at the JJB.

He said: "Henri is pleased to come here and we are very pleased to have him.

"We want him to make the headlines for the right reasons because he's too good a player not to.

"I want people to talk about his football because that is what he does best.

"The lad has got frightening pace, he's a matchwinner, and I've seen him on a couple of occasions absolutely torture Premier League defences.

"He now has to do that more regularly.

"Once we get him fit – I don't think he's played a competitive game for a while – he will be a great asset.

"People will say Henri is a gamble for us, but he is an unbelievable talent and it's up to us to get the best out of him.

"I'm sure we can do that."

With Camara in the bag to add to Friday's signing of Damien Francis, Jewell now has his sights set on other targets.

And he believes Latics' change of fortune in the transfer market is a reward for the patience they shown over the summer.

Jewell said: "We want to bring in two more signings this week.

"We have agreed terms with a player who should be coming in today, and if we bring in the other one I want, we will have four quality central midfielders.

"After that, if a good player becomes available and will improve the squad, I will try and get him.

"We have been thin on the ground and it has taken a long time to get players in.

"I have come in for a lot of stick from supporters in the summer for not signing players.

"But I believe if you take your time and don't dive in, you eventually get the right ones.

"We aren't going into the Premiership just to be part of the ride, we want to give it our best shot."

While doing his best to add to the squad, Jewell also revealed talks will begin later in the week to try and negotiate a new contract with Nathan Ellington.

And he was quick to flatten speculation suggesting a swap deal involving the Duke and West Brom striker Robert Earnshaw.

"It has been reported I went to Bryan Robson to ask him about Earnshaw, but that is not the case," said Jewell.

"That is categorically not true.

"The people here are meeting Nathan's agent on Wednesday to try and discuss a new contract."

Latics rounded off their pre-season programme with a 1-0 victory over Boavista on Saturday, with Ellington on target from the penalty spot.

Jewell said: "It was another 90 minutes for the lads although the tempo wasn't anything like what we'll come across in the Premiership.

"It was okay, we won the game and kept another clean sheet, and a few of the lads got their home debuts, albeit in a friendly.

"We've now got some fine tuning to do and hopefully I'll have a headache picking what I think is out best eleven for the Chelsea game."
