Paper Talk: Bring it on!

Latics would clinch promotion with a better result against their local rivals than Ipswich get against Crewe later in the day.

But any other scenario would see the chase for second place go to the final game against Reading.

Jewell said: "It is a major game at Preston and one you want to be involved in.

"It's on television which probably gives it a bit more spice, and I don't really know if starting early is an advantage or disadvantage.

"Whether it is ideal to have games with different kick-off times at this vital stage of the season is debatable. But we have to go there and try and win the game."

The weekend saw the first promotion issue decided, Sunderland booking their return to the Premiership after beating Leicester 2-1.

It's then a case of as you were, two points still separating Latics and Ipswich – the Tractor Boys drew 1-1 at Leeds.

Jewell said: "The point we got from QPR might be a valuable one. We were disappointed with it but in the cold light of day we still have two points more than Ipswich.

"On paper we have two difficult fixtures and Ipswich's last two are arguably easier.

"But if football was played on paper, our game against QPR would have gone down as a home win and not as a 0-0 draw.

"At this stage of the season you get a lot of funny results and there is still a lot to play for.

"We're up there in the melting pot and I wouldn't swap our position for anyone else's apart from Sunderland.

"I'd like to pass on my congratulations to Sunderland and Mick McCarthy because it's an excellent achievement and fully deserved.

"There are still six points to play for and we can still catch Sunderland as well, so that shows how tight things are."

Had Latics managed to beat QPR they would have been odds on to join the Black Cats in the Premiership next season.

But the visitors proved stubborn opposition, content to get men behind the ball and attack on the break. Latics created plenty of chances but the closest they went to scoring was a Jason Roberts shot which cannoned back off the post.

Jewell said: "As the game went on you got the impression it was going to be one of those days when the ball wouldn't go in.

"We had some good chances and the only criticism of the lads is that we didn't work their goalkeeper.

"There was only one side which wanted to win the game but things just didn't fall for us in the right areas.

"That's football and it happens to all teams at all levels, we are no different.

"We're disappointed we didn't get the three points we deserved but credit to QPR who had nothing to play for but pride.

"They came with a gameplan to try and make life difficult and frustrate us.

"The first goal in a game like this is always going to be vital and had we got it, I would have thought we would have won comfortably.

"The longer it went on, the more QPR had something to hold on to.

"We almost snatched it at the death through Nathan Ellington but it could have been worse because QPR broke on us in the last minute."
