Paper Talk: Brick Wall

He has targeted a forward from a Premiership club and still hasn't given up on Brett Ormerod or Ade Akinbiyi who he tried and failed to land last week.

But the Latics manager will limit himself to one new addition up front, scotching rumours he might be tempted to bring in two of his targets.

The need for another goalscorer in the squad was highlighted by Saturday's home defeat to Stoke.

Leading scorer Nathan Ellington has been struggling with a shoulder injury while Jason Roberts picked up a slight groin strain at the weekend.

So far, Jewell has hit a series of brick walls – a cash bid for Akinbiyi was rejected by Stoke last week while a loan swoop for Southampton's Ormerod also fell through.

Jewell told the Evening Post: "People must get fed up of me talking about trying to improve the squad but we are trying.

"I have made numerous enquiries about players and for different reasons those moves haven't come off.

"Some of the players haven't wanted to come, in other cases managers won't release them, sometimes the wages are too high and sometimes the transfer fee is too high.

"It's not for the lack of trying we've not been successful, and I probably got about three hours sleep over the weekend as I was making enquiries.

"Every time you lose or every time you win, you always seem to be thinking how can we improve things, how can we give the players even more help, how can we push ourselves over that finishing line?

"It's my job to do that and I will continue looking for who I think will be the right type of player for this club.

"I made a telephone call yesterday to a Premier League manager about a player and I'm waiting for an answer on that one."

Looking back at his recent efforts, Jewell said: "Just before the transfer window shut we arranged a three-month loan for Brett Ormerod.

"Wolves also wanted him, he didn't want to go out on loan, but then he changed his mind.

"Meanwhile, Southampton loaned Dexter Blackstock to Plymouth and Kevin Phillips picked up a calf injury, so Ormerod was on their bench at the weekend.

"There was a report of us putting in a £2m offer for him, but that isn't the case.

"The other one we went for was Akinibiyi but our bid was turned down by Stoke.

"Although we are looking at various strikers, it's just one of them we're looking to bring in.

"We already the two lads up front (Ellington and Roberts) and David Graham, so we just need one more."

Meanwhile, Latics' revamped training facilities at Christopher Park have opened for business.

A new gym, treatment room and hydrotherapy pool have been built while the existing dressing rooms and canteen have been given a makeover.
