Paper Talk: Blake chase

Two bids for the striker were turned down by Burnley last week with the Clarets slapping a "not for sale" sign on their star asset.

But Jewell still believes there is a chance of bringing Blake to the JJB Stadium, although he will now leave it in the hands of chairman Dave Whelan.

Latics bid £500,000 a week ago and upped the offer to £600,000 last Friday but neither amount was enough to tempt the Turf Moor outfit to sell.

Jewell said: "I'm going to leave this one with the chairman.

"I think we made a fair offer for Blakey but obviously Burnley don't, and I can understand why Steve Cotterill doesn't want to sell him – I wouldn't if I was Steve.

"It's out of my hands now but I might get the chairman to speak with their chairman.

"I don't want it to drag on and I think we need to know pretty soon what is happening.

"Blakey is a quality player and I don't think there is anyone in this league with better technique.

"If we can get him here, he could play in different systems – alongside either of the strikers we have already got or behind those two."

Blake is not the only target for Jewell, but getting them off the wanted list and into the club is proving a frustrating business for the manager.

Jewell admitted: "I'm getting a little bit cheesed off because I want to bring two or three quality in, but so far nothing has managed to come off.

"There are various reasons for that, and I think other clubs always want more money off us because we are Wigan and know our position.

"Although we have come a long way, we are still not that big fish at the minute in the minds of some players and their clubs.

"Three weeks ago we made a substantial bid for a striker in this division which didn't come off, but whether they thought he could go higher, I don't know.

"We have still to reach the next level and I get the feeling people are waiting for the bubble to burst here.

"Until we actually get into the Premiership or establish ourselves as a top Championship side, people might be reluctant to come."

Meanwhile, Jewell has praised the contribution of Alan Mahon to the Latics side since his introduction to the centre of midfield.

The Irishman scored his fifth goal of the campaign against Preston on Sunday and has filled the hole left by Per Frandsen's season-ending injury.

Jewell said: "I have been impressed with Mahon's attitude because he's trying to do what I what him to do.

"I have asked him to cut out some of the fancy stuff and be a bit more solid, and he has taken that on board.

"He has a lot of quality about him but sometimes we have to ask him to keep things more simple – it's the same for Jimmy Bullard and Nathan Ellington too."
