Paper Talk: Big names may leave

Last updated : 11 May 2004 By Paul Farrington
Ten players are out of contract in the summer and the Latics boss must now decide who stays and who goes ahead of the 2004/05 campaign.

Two of those 10 – Peter Kennedy and young goalkeeper Ryan Yeomans – are definitely leaving.

And while contract offers are likely to be made to the others, it's inevitable some of them will be playing their football elsewhere next season.

Record scorer Andy Liddell, skipper Jason de Vos and vice-captain Matt Jackson are the three big names coming to the end of their current deals.

The trio are thought to have been offered new one-year deals, but Liddell and de Vos have reportedly rejected the terms.

Liddell is a player in demand, with Preston, Sheffield United and Bristol City eyeing him up as a possible Bosman signing in July.

North End boss Craig Brown and Blades manager Neil Warnock have expressed an interest, although both have added it was Liddell's agent who had approached them.

And City chief Danny Wilson watched Latics' game at Nottingham Forest last week, with Liddell among the players he was keeping a particularly close eye on.

Liddell was the last player off the pitch after the final whistle against West Ham on Sunday, and seems resigned to leaving.

It is thought he wants more than the one-year on the table , with de Vos in a similar boat.

Jackson, currently recovering from an Achilles tendon injury, has previously hinted he would be happy to accept the club's contract offer, with him settled in the area.

The others out of contract are Gareth Farrelly, Paul Mitchell, Mike Flynn and goalkeepers Gary Walsh and James Salisbury.

Farrelly only signed a short-term deal when he joined in March from Bolton. He has started the last two games in place of Jason Jarrett and may have done enough to be offered a longer stay.

Jewell is thought to be keen to hang on to the others, although much will depend on whether they can get better terms elsewhere.

Veteran Walsh, though, seems set to stay, as does Salisbury who has progressed well in the reserves this season.

Definitely moving on are Kennedy and Yeomans, Kennedy told as long ago as November that he wouldn't be getting new terms.

He spent a month on loan with Derby County earlier in the campaign and hasn't featured at first team level since.

Yeomans is approaching the end of his first professional contract but has been over taken by Salisbury in the keepers' pecking order.

Jewell's own position has been subject of speculation in recent days, with him heavily linked with the Leeds United vacancy.

Eddie Gray left the position yesterday, and Jewell has been suggested as a possible replacement along with Iain Dowie and Tony Pulis.

His name has also surprisingly been linked with Burnley, although it's unlikely the Clarets would be in a position to lure him from Latics.

Meanwhile, striker Neil Roberts has been named in the Wales squad to play Norway in Oslo on May 27 and against Canada at Wrexham three days later.
