Paper Talk: Away day to Crewe can be a perfect lift

Some of their best displays this season have been on the road, and Latics have won their last two away league matches at Rotherham and Sheffield United.

It also won't have escaped Jewell's notice that his side have won at Gresty Road for the last two seasons.

He told the Evening Post: "I think most of our better performances have come on the road this season so we're looking forward to this one.

"We tend to be better on the counter-attack than at breaking teams down, and we like to move the ball quickly, which can be difficult on the surface at our place at the moment.

"It suits us better when sides come at us and that tends to happen more when we play away."

The recent dip in form is something Jewell has discussed with his players ahead of the weekend.

But he has been careful not to blow the draw and the defeat to Watford and Stoke out of all proportion.

Jewell said: "This is not a crisis, we are still second in the league, and before all this we won our three previous league games without conceding a goal.

"We had a blip against Watford and in the Stoke game I'll hold my hand up and say we weren't good enough on those day.

"I've had a meeting with the lads and just told them that at this stage it's not about what is in the legs, it's about what is in your heart and mind.

"They have to answer the question over the coming matches as to whether they've got the heart for it and whether they've got the mental strength.

"Successful teams tend to be the ones who want it the most and are mentally the toughest.

"I believe in the players here, although believing in them and actually doing the job are two totally different things.

"There's enough experience in the team but at times we just get a little bit anxious in our willingness to do well.

"If we stick to the things we work on in training we should be okay."

Left-back Leighton Baines rejoined the squad this morning after returning from duty with the England Under-21 squad.

He picked up his third cap in the 2-1 defeat to Holland at Pride Park on Tuesday night, playing the in first half before being replaced by
Liverpool's John Welch.

Baines will now have to wait until late next month to see whether he performed well enough to earn a place in Peter Taylor's squad for the European Championship qualifier against Germany.

On the injury front, Jason Roberts (groin) and Emerson Thome (knee) have been receiving treatment this week but should be fine for Saturday.

* Latics Reserves yesterday lost 1-0 to Sheffield United at Chesterfield.

An 88th-minute goal by Steve Kabba did the damage against a side containing David Wright, David Graham and Ian Breckin.

* Latics are close to selling out their allocation of tickets for the Crewe game.
* Former Latics midfielder Ian Kilford is set to join UniBond First Division side Kendal Town from Barrow.
