Paper Talk: Arjan linked with Latics return

...at Portsmouth and Latics are ready to make their move to bring him back to the JJB Stadium after three years away.

Bolstering the back line has been a priority for manager Paul Jewell this summer, with him already bringing in Stephane Henchoz.

But the need for another central defender has increased as Emerson Thome faces more than a month on the sidelines with a thigh strain.

Thome's absence has left Jewell with only Henchoz, skipper Matt Jackson and David Wright – a full-back by trade – to choose from in the middle.

De Zeeuw, 35, has been a regular in the Pompey defence since moving to Fratton Park, but new manager Alain Perrin sees Andy O'Brien and Dejen Stefanovic as his first choice pairing at the back.

With no desire to sit on the bench, the Dutchman is tempted to look elsewhere for first-team football.

De Zeeuw is flattered to be linked with a Wigan return, although refused to be drawn on whether a move could be on the cards.

He told the Evening Post: "There's one or two issues with the new manager here which I can't really go into.

"There's been a lot of speculation in the papers and by the fans, but all I can say is I'm considering moving.

"I need Portsmouth to help me out with that because I'm still under contract to them.

"I wouldn't say no to Wigan because I had some really good times there, but it's out of my hands.

"It is nice to be speculated about."

De Zeeuw was a popular figure during his three years in Wigan, Jewell describing him as the best professional he'd worked with.

It's unlikely he will be Latics' next signing, though, that honour set to be bestowed on Damien Francis today.

The midfielder was due back at the JJB to complete a £1.5m move from Norwich City after negotiations finally came to a satisfactory conclusion.

Things had looked in the balance after talks between his agent Tony Finnegan and Latics earlier in the week failed to see a deal struck.

But it's thought chairman Dave Whelan got the ball rolling again yesterday.

If the paperwork is done in time, Francis, 26, could make his debut against Boavista tomorrow (kick-off 3pm). While much attention has been on incoming deals, Nathan Ellington is reported to be interesting West Brom, with several papers speculating that a swap deal involving Baggies hitman Robert Earnshaw could be on the cards.

Ellington has less than a year left on his contract and negotiations have so far failed to see him sign a new deal.

But it's though contract talks could soon resume. The visit of Boavista is Latics' final friendly game of their pre-season programme.

Jewell and his players will then have a clear week to prepare for the Chelsea clash a week on Sunday.

A near full-strength Latics side will be on show tomorrow, although Lee McCulloch looks likely to miss out after picking up a knock at Accrington on Wednesday night.

Only the West and East Stands are open tomorrow, admission £10 adults and £5 concessions.

Latics have received an allocation of 1,800 seats for the away game at Charlton on August 20. Around 500 of those have been taken up by away season ticket holders.

They go on sale on Monday to corporate and blue chip members, and to home season ticket holders on Wednesday.
