Paper Talk: Andy waits

Last updated : 22 April 2004 By Paul Farrington
The fans' favourite is one of a number of senior players out of contract this summer.

Liddell admits that with nothing yet on the table for next season, the next few weeks could be his swansong at the club.

And if that does prove to be the case, he wants to go out on a high by pushing the club towards the Premiership.

Liddell said: "I'm not thinking of a contract at the moment, all my energies are focused towards trying to help Wigan into the play-offs.

"I presume that this will be my last season here as my contract is running out and I haven't signed a new one.

"But I'm not worried about it because I've had such a good time at the club.

"If we finish in the play-offs and we go up, what a brilliant way it would be to finish.

"If that doesn't happen, nothing can sour what has happened here for me.

"I've had a fantastic time, the people have been great, and so have the other players.

"It's the best move I made coming to Wigan a few years ago and I have a lot to be grateful for.

"Whatever happens, nothing will distract me from what I do on the pitch.

"I don't go out there thinking about contracts, no player does."

Liddell, 30, is the longest serving member of the squad, having joined Latics from Barnsley in October 1998.

And wherever he ends up playing his football, he believes there are plenty more years left in the game for him.

The club's record league scorer said: "I haven't given up hope of something at Wigan.

"I have spoken to the manager, although what we talked about is a private matter between him and myself.

"Hopefully I have done well enough here for other clubs to want me, and if Wigan turn round in the summer and want to talk about a new contract, I will listen because I would prefer to stay.

"If that doesn't happen, I accept it because this is a business.

"I know I have plenty of football left in me yet. If you were to ask the manager here, he will tell you I'm one of the fittest players we have got."

The other senior players who are in the final few months of their contracts include Jason de Vos, Matt Jackson, Paul Mitchell, Mike Flynn, Gary Walsh and Peter Kennedy.

Only Kennedy, currently recovering after a hernia operation, has been told he won't be offered new terms. Manager Paul Jewell has previously indicated he would like to keep the others at the club, although much will depend on the club's budget and which division Latics are in next season.

Meanwhile, skipper de Vos picked up a slight hip injury in the draw at Crystal Palace last week, but should be fit for Sunderland's visit to the JJB on Saturday.

Right-back Nicky Eaden also needed stitches in a shin injury, but will have recovered in time for the weekend.
