Paper Talk: Andreas to shine

The Sweden international has been restricted to just a single substitute's appearance in the first team following his January move from Djurgaarden.

He's sat on the bench as an unused sub another four occasions and has mainly had to survive on a diet of reserve football.

But Latics manager Paul Jewell says there is a role for Johansson to play and the best of him will be seen once he settles fully into English life.

Jewell told the Evening Post: "Andreas is improving all the time with the work we're doing with him on the training ground.

"When he first came, the training was a shock to him, the style of play will have been a shock, and so would the way football is played in the Championship.

"We will see the best of him next year, he has good technique and is getting stronger all the time, but anything that happens this season will be a bonus."

Jewell admits that 26-year-old Johansson has taken time to settle in this country, although argues that a move between two English clubs – let alone a switch from abroad – is never easy.

He said: "His girlfriend is in Sweden which can't be easy and people laugh when I say he has more speeding fines than appearances. He's had to find a new flat to live in and adapt to a new language and culture which does take a lot of time.

"It's bad enough when a player moves from London to a club in the north, so to move from Sweden to Wigan – a place he doesn't know too much about – is a major upheaval."

Plenty was expected from Johansson when Latics paid Stockholm-based Djurgaarden £550,000 in the transfer window.

But Jewell has played a patient game, and with sufficient midfield cover, seems content to wait until next season before considering him a regular.

On the selection front, Latics look set to welcome back Lee McCulloch to the squad for Saturday's visit to Leicester City.

The Scotsman has missed the last two games because of a muscle spasm in his back.

Jewell said: "Lee has trained for the last three days and it would be a big plus for us if we could get him back in contention.

"You don't realise how much you miss a player like him until he actually doesn't play, so it will be nice to have him available."

Jewell has sent his thanks to Wolves after they beat Ipswich on Monday at Molineux to hand the initiative to Latics in the race for automatic promotion.
And he's admitted he was quietly confident Glenn Hoddle's side would do them a favour.

Jewell said: "I think we are the only side to beat Wolves in the last 15 games so I fancied them to get a result against Ipswich.

"It's back in our own hands now and that is all you can ask for at this time of the season.

"At the moment we are a bit happier than Ipswich but come the weekend, who knows who will be feeling good?

"I watched the match on television at home with the family and even my wife got excited when Wolves scored!"
