Paper Talk: Andreas set for Latics bow

Last updated : 25 January 2005 By Wigan Evening Post.
The Sweden international has yet to kick a ball in competitive action since completing his £550,000 move from Djurgardens more than a fortnight ago.

But after several tough training sessions to bolster his fitness, he is pencilled in for a run in David Lowe's second string for the Pontins League fixture at Millmoor this evening.

It's a ground Johansson has already visited during his short time in England having travelled there with the first team squad for the 2-0 league win a week last Saturday.

Some match action tonight and another run out in the reserves next week should push him towards a senior debut when Latics entertain Stoke City at the JJB Stadium on February 5.

If his match fitness is up to speed, manager Paul Jewell would be tempted to start him against the Potters in a bid to find a winning formula in midfield.

He has chopped and changed in the middle in recent weeks, Gareth Whalley and Mike Flynn both given starts alongside Jimmy Bullard in recent games.

Alan Mahon also got a lengthy run as a second-half substitute against Watford last Saturday in an attempt to press his claim.

But having chased Johansson's services for a number of months and brought him to England, Jewell will be eager to introduce his international class to the side.

Jewell said: "We have been getting some hard work into Andreas and hopefully he now isn't too far away from being involved.

"He has needed time to settle here and he hasn't played since the end of the Swedish season five or six weeks ago.

"Andreas is a good addition to the squad and everyone is looking forward to seeing him play."

Ideally, Johansson won't be the only new recruit to the squad by the time Latics return to league action after their current mini-break.

Jewell hopes to use the gap in the fixture list to conduct some incoming business in preparation for their promotion push.

As reported in the Evening Post last week, Stoke striker Ade Akinbiyi is a target while soccer's rumour mill has thrown up Manchester City's Jon Macken as a possible target.

While Latics haven't made an official bid for Akinbiyi – Stoke say Sheffield United have been the only club to do so – they are thought to have shown their interest in the much-travelled forward.

The Potters are reluctant to let him leave the Britannia Stadium, especially with West Brom's Rob Hulse turning down a £1m move to Stoke yesterday.

Hulse could now emerge as a target for Latics – Jewell tried to sign him before he left Crewe for The Hawthorns in the summer of 2003.

Although Jewell has 30-goal pair Nathan Ellington and Jason Roberts at his disposal, he is keen to further strengthen the forward line as the season enters a critical stage.

A right-sided midfielder is also thought to be on his shopping list to increase selection options.
