Paper Talk: Action starting on tour

Latics jetted out to Holland yesterday for a six-day training camp to step up their preparations for the new season.

They play two matches this week, crossing the Belgium border to play Verbroedering Geel tomorrow night and Patro Maasmechelen on Thursday.

Manager Jewell intends using all of his players – fitness permitting – in the games and hopes that no-one will have to play a full 90 minutes.

The softly-softly approach should ensure they return home in good condition, ready for another series of friendlies before the season kicks-off on August 7 against Nottingham Forest at the JJB.

Jewell said: "There is no chance that people will be playing a full 90 minutes, instead it'll be a case of 45 minutes or an hour for them.

"Last year we had to play some of them for the whole game because we were short of numbers, but this time we have everyone available.

"This should be a good tour for us and the lads enjoy coming over here to Holland.

"We're not here for too long, it's an ideal length of time and is an important part of our preparations.

"In Wigan, we're a bit short of space because the training ground is being done up, so the change of scene will be good.

"The hotel we're in is fantastic, it's got a great gym and pool, while the training ground is only 20 yards down the road."

Latics' two games in Belgium should see debuts for summer signings Per Frandsen, David Graham and David Wright.

And there might be clues about the identity of who will replace the departed Jason de Vos as club captain.

On their return, Latics tackle Southport on July 20 followed by the short trip to Leigh 24 hours later.

They then have friendlies away at Bury (July 24), Halifax (July 27), Burscough (July 28) and Blackpool (August 1).

Jewell has been pleased with the way pre-season training has gone so far, adding to his contentment about the direction the club is moving in.

He's looking forward to the challenge of keeping Latics in the higher reaches of the division and believes much progress has been made.

Jewell said: "Things are beginning to fall into place at the club.

"We have a lovely stadium and the training ground is being improved as we speak.

"The quality of players we are bringing in is getting better while the quality of agents ringing me up to offer players is better!

"But we aren't standing back thinking that everything is rosy in the garden, we want to be better still."
