Paper Talk: A good Brett

He knows breaking up Latics' 41-goal partnership of Nathan Ellington and Jason Roberts will be difficult but is prepared to help the promotion charge in any way he can.

Ormerod said: "I have come to a great team which plays great football and where everyone works hard for each other.

"The front two here are the best partnership outside the Premiership without a doubt and I'll just have to get my head down, work hard and see what happens.

"I've watched Wigan a few times on the television and they have a tremendous squad.

"Everyone has quality on the ball and the lads have made me very welcome since I arrived.

"I don't see why we can't get promoted because Wigan are as good as anything I have seen in this league.

"I'm excited about coming here and I've done that to help them mount that final push.

"If they did get into the Premiership, I don't see why they can't survive.

"It is a hard league but as Everton have shown this season, if you have a lot of team spirit and players who work hard, you can do well."

Ormerod's arrival in Wigan has been a long time coming with manager Paul Jewell trying on numerous occasions to sign him.

The loan switch is currently just for a month but it looks like being extended until the end of the season.

Ormerod, 28, said: "I think this is seventh time lucky from my point of view when it comes to joining Wigan.

"I was going to come here originally from Blackpool but then Southampton came in.

"Little things have then stood in my way of coming a few times so it is nice to be finally here.

"I was meant to come on loan about a month ago and had actually got to the stage of packing only to get a phone call to saw I wasn't going anywhere.

"It was a bit of a smack in the face at the time but I'm here now and I'm determined to enjoy it.

"At the moment it's just for a month but hopefully it will go on until the end of the season and then we'll take things from there."

Ormerod has no regrets about swapping Southampton's fight for Premiership
survival for Latics' promotion push.

"Apart from this season when we had three managers before Christmas, I've had three great years with Southampton," he said.

"I played in an FA Cup final, played in Europe, and the club finished higher than ever in the Premier League.

"I still have a year on my contract after this season so we'll see what happens."

Ormerod felt unlucky not to make a winning debut with Latics as a controversial late equaliser from Gareth Taylor denied them.

Taylor looked yards offside when heading home in the 85th minute, levelling Lee McCulloch's 46th-minute opener.

Ormerod said: "It was disappointing not to win – all the lads thought their goal was offside.

"You have to rely on the linesman to give you some help and he didn't do that.

"But every point is vital at this stage of the season so we'll take this one.

"We have some massive games coming up and we have to be ready for those."

The draw cost Latics top spot with Sunderland leapfrogging them thanks to a 1-0 win over Coventry.

But third-placed Ipswich could only share a goalless draw at Gillingham, keeping them two points behind Jewell's men.
