No gambling culture at Latics

The subject of top footballers betting huge sums of cash has taken up column upon column of the national press in the last week, with England star Michael Owen and Chelsea striker Eidur Gudjohnsen alleged to have lost vast sums of money.

While Jewell believes the problem has been blown out of all proportion, the Latics manager has revealed he doesn't allow his players to gamble before matches in case it affects their performance on the pitch.

He said: "Let's be honest, anything that goes on in football these days is overplayed.

"I have to say that I liked a game of cards when I was a player but the main problem then was that we didn't have enough money to gamble with anyway!

"I've no problem if the lads want to have a game of cards – it's only a few of them anyway – but they can only play on the way home from a game.

"I don't want anything to break their concentration pre-match so they have to relax, watch a video or listen to music.

"Gambling is certainly not a problem here and it wasn't when I was in charge of Bradford either.

"My worry would be if someone lost money on the way to a game, would their performance then be affected because they were worrying about the cash they had lost?

"That's when it would become a major problem and that's exactly why we stop them playing before a game here."

While Jewell is happy with his players' approach ahead of games, he's also been content with their on-field behaviour this season.

Although three players have been sent-off, and with Neil Roberts and Lee McCulloch facing one-match bans for picking up five bookings, the boss takes the view Latics have cleaned up their act compared to last term.

"We have kept our discipline and heads very well this season, although we are going to pick up suspensions – that comes with the territory," said Jewell. "If you look at the three red cards, Tony Dinning's was silly and Lids was a bit daft as well.

"Matt Jackson was unlucky down at Luton but in the main we have kept our discipline and it's important we continue to do that.

"Last season there were too many daft bookings and sendings-off."

Striker Roberts is suspended for Saturday's visit to Swindon while McCulloch misses the home game against Cheltenham next week.

Jason de Vos has been named in Canada's squad for their friendly in Libya on February 12.

The JJB Stadium was hosting a meeting of all 72 Football League clubs today.
