Mac is on the mend

The Scottish winger was having a fitness test this afternoon ahead of Chesterfield's visit to the JJB Stadium.

McCulloch was left in agony by a chest-high tackle from Crewe's Efe Sodje just 15 seconds into Tuesday night's win.

He has stud marks running right the way down his abdomen but fortunately escaped without suffering any broken ribs.

The injury forced him to miss training yesterday although boss Paul Jewell was pleased to report he was feeling a lot better.

Jewell said: "Lee has been very sore but thankfully there was nothing broken.

"It's horrific with stud marks all over his body, although it is probably not quite as bad as it looks.

"We'll have a look at him today in training and take things from there."

If McCulloch is passed fit, it would solve a selection problem on the left-wing for Jewell.

He's still likely to be without Peter Kennedy against Chesterfield, although the Northern Ireland international returned to training yesterday after a bout of chickenpox.

Jewell said: "It's taken a lot out of Peter and chickenpox can be quite nasty in adults – he caught it from his children.

"I would think the Chesterfield game has come a bit too early for him because yesterday was his first session back."

After successive games on the road, Latics return to home comforts tomorrow, and Jewell hopes they can follow up the win at Crewe with three more promotion points at the JJB.

He's appealed for the supporters to play their part against a Spireites side who have failed to win their last eight games.

"We have to show the same desire, energy and passion tomorrow that we did at Crewe," said the manager.

"It was a good win in midweek but that's gone now and we have to be fully focussed on Chesterfield.

"We don't want to be in the position where we get a win at Crewe and then don't follow it up with a result at home.

"Chesterfield aren't on a good run at the moment but neither were Cheltenham earlier in the month and they got a draw here.

"The supporters have a big part to play because it can be a case of 'after the Lord Mayor's Show' in their eyes.

"I'd like to make it clear that this is a massive game for us and it's important to get a good atmosphere in the stadium.

"They can be like a 12th man to us and we need their support," added the Latics boss.
