Latics remain bang on target

Latics hit the road again tonight to tackle Mansfield, and victory at Field Mill would extend their lead at the top of the table to 12 points.

While disappointed to lose against Swindon, Jewell believes only three defeats in 28 league games is good going by anyone's standards.

And with 65 points already in the bag, Latics are comfortably in front of the manager's pre-season target.

Jewell said: "A defeat was going to happen some time and might well do again between now and the end of the season.

"If you go through a season and only lose three league games, it's almost miracle status.

"We have got 65 points from 28 games, and having set a target of two points per game, so we are still nine points ahead of ourselves.

"It has been a terrible weekend because we have got used to winning but I wouldn't swap our position for anyone else's.

"I'm realistic enough to know that one defeat in 22 games isn't a crisis, and if we keep our nerve we should be okay.

"But there's still a lot of football to be played yet."

The Latics squad were put through a high tempo training session yesterday to rid their minds of the Swindon game and prepare for tonight's trip to Nottinghamshire.

And Jewell is backing his players to bounce back, even though he envisages a stern examination from Mansfield who are battling to avoid relegation.

Jewell said: "It was a strange feeling coming back yesterday morning after a defeat but it is out of their systems now.

"We normally come in on a Sunday if we have a Tuesday game, but I gave the lads a day off after a long journey.

"They are looking forward to Mansfield and having a game so quickly is the best thing which could have happened.

"Make no mistake about it, it will be a difficult game and we have to treat them with due respect.

"But we expect to win the game if we play well.

"Keith Curle has done well since he took over at Mansfield and are now fourth bottom after looking relegation certs at one point.

"They have conceded a lot of goals in the early part of the season but have tightened up since Keith came in.

Suspension

"At the end of the day, it is about what we do on the night."

Jewell reported no fresh injury worries from the weekend and is able to add Neil Roberts to the squad after he missed the Swindon trip through suspension.

Lee McCulloch, on target at the weekend, is available this evening.

But he serves a one-match ban this Saturday after collecting five bookings.
