Kennedy hails mean Latics

Wigan have won their last five away games in the league – without leaking a goal – to rewrite the club history books with the runaway leaders now boasting the meanest defence in England.

And Kennedy, who fired Wigan's winner with his first ever goal for Latics in Friday's 1-0 win over promotion rivals Bristol City, said: "We've only conceded four goals away from home in the league this season and that's an amazing statistic and a credit to the whole team.

"Obviously Jason de Vos, Matt Jackson and our goalkeeper John Filan have had a very important part to play, but there's certainly more to it than that.

"Nicky Eaden has done very well since he arrived while Steve McMillan has probably played more games at left-back than I have and has done very well too.

"Leighton Baines has played now and again, as has Ian Breckin and Ged Brannan and that just shows what strength in depth we have because all three have done their jobs well.

"But you have also got to give credit to the rest of the team for that amazing record because the strikers – Nathan Ellington, Andy Liddell, and Neil Roberts – plus the midfielders, have all kept their discipline.

"That makes a huge contribution to the cause when you have to defend in games because they have all helped out besides doing their own jobs.

"We have never given the opposition time to settle on the ball and that, coupled to our superb form, is the key to our successful season so far.

"We are in a great position but there's no way we will be taking our eye off the ball because we want to get the job finished and make sure we are in Division One next season."

Friday's win at Ashton Gate was Wigan's 10th league win in a row and extended their unbeaten run in Division Two to 20 games – and Latics boss Paul Jewell was quick to praise Kennedy's contribution.

Jewell said: "Let's not kid ourselves – Peter has had a difficult time at Wigan.

"We were all delighted with his goal at Bristol and I thought his general performance was excellent.

"Hopefully he'll kick on from here and show everybody what a good player he is."

Steve McMillan and Scott Green were pencilled in for today's reserve game against Wrexham at The Racecourse.

McMillan has not featured since picking up a neck injury at Port Vale on Boxing Day.

Oldham cut Latics' lead at the top of Division Two to nine points last night after they beat Brentford, who still harbour play-off ambitions of their own, 2-1 at Boundary Park with goals from Fitz Hall and Lee Duxbury.
