Jewell: December's Best
He was presented with a cut-glass trophy and bottle of champagne at a lunch at Wrightington Country Club.

Award sponsors Nationwide honoured Jewell for guiding Latics to six league and cup wins during December, hot on the heels of him picking up the Second Division gong for November.

Four of those victories came in the league, allowing Latics to open up a healthy gap at the top of the table.

Jewell once again heaped praise on his players and coaching staff, saying it was a collective effort rather than a prize for himself.

Meanwhile, Matt Jackson believes the pressure will be off Wigan in Friday night's televised promotion clash at Bristol City.

Latics enjoy a 10-point lead over the fourth placed Robins and hope to come away from Ashton Gate with the gap further widened.

Centre-half Jackson hopes that will work to their advantage and is eagerly awaiting the game being shown live on Sky Sports.

But he has also warned Latics will need to be back to their best after their FA Cup exit at Stoke last Saturday.

Jackson said: "Bristol City are a strong at home and score a lot of goals.
"They concede one or two as well so it should be a great game – the fact the cameras are there gives an indication of how important it is to everyone.

"The onus is on City to win the game which is great for us, although we'll be going there to win and we're capable of that.

"But if you were to ask which of the sides would be happiest with a draw, then obviously it would be us.

"We're going to approach it in a positive manner and all the lads are looking forward to it."

Jackson, who was stand-in skipper at Stoke, looked back on Saturday's 3-0 defeat with much disappointment.

But he is confident Latics can put it firmly behind them.

He said: "We didn't perform very well at Stoke but we'll pick ourselves from it.
"It was disappointing to lose in front of another good travelling support.

"Things could have been different if we had scored at 2-0 but their third goal finished us off.

"Now it's time to lift ourselves up, go down to Bristol and kick on again."
Latics' away game at Mansfield has been rearranged for Tuesday, January 28 (kick-off 7.45pm).

The visit to Field Mill was originally scheduled for last Saturday but was postponed due to Latics' FA Cup game.
