Injury-hit McMillan ready to return again

McMillan: May return on Friday
The left-back resumed training on Monday after a painful neck injury and was hoping to test his fitness in the reserves today.

But the Avon Insurance League game against Blackpool at Robin Park was subject to a morning pitch inspection by a local referee following the cold snap.

Even if the game fell foul to the frost, it is still hoped McMillan will have regained sufficient fitness in training in order for him to travel to Ashton Gate.

The Scotsman's stop-start season came to another halt on Boxing Day when he complained of a stiff neck in the first half of the game at Port Vale.

It forced him to be substituted at the interval and in the subsequent three games, Peter Kennedy has filled in for him.

But with Bristol City dangerman Scott Murray playing down the hosts' right-wing on Friday, McMillan's presence at left-back would be desirable.

Manager Paul Jewell said: "Steve is back in full training and it has been stop-start for him recently.

"We'll try and get him a run out in the reserves and see how he does in that."
The 26-year-old hasn't enjoyed the rub of the green with injuries since his £550,000 move from Motherwell almost two years ago.

An ankle injury disrupted his pre-season programme in the summer and last season, he picked up a niggling back problem from an uncomfortable chair he sat on when using his computer at home.

When he is fit, though, McMillan is regarded as one of the best left-backs in the Second Division and wouldn't find the step up to the First Division difficult either.

His return to training means Jewell should have a fully fit squad to select from on Friday evening.

Jason de Vos and Tony Dinning have both returned to training after being left out of Saturday's FA Cup game at Stoke.

Jewell rested the pair to enable them to rest foot and back injuries respectively.

And with Andy Liddell and Lee McCulloch now fully fit after long spells on the sidelines, the Latics boss has the rare luxury of having everyone available.

Meanwhile, supporters planning to travel to the game at Swindon Town on January 25 might be advised to see their bank manager.

Adults buying tickets ahead of the County Ground clash are being charged £19 and that figures rises to £21 if they pay on the day.

Over 60s and students pay £12 in advance and £13 on the day, while for Under 16s it's £7 and £6 respectively.

They went on sale today to season tickets holders before going on general sale a week tomorrow.
