Injury boost over skipper

The centre-half was due to lead Canada against Scotland in Edinburgh on Tuesday night.

But a knee injury forced him to duck out on the day of the game and he returned to Wigan yesterday for treatment.

De Vos picked up the knock in Latics' away game at Plymouth last weekend, although he still joined up with the Canadian squad.

However, he decided to pull out when he realised that playing in the international friendly would have aggravated the injury and placed his availability for the Stockport game in doubt.

Latics will be relieved the skipper opted to put club ahead of country as the first-team squad is light on cover at the back.

Ian Breckin is still recovering from a minor knee operation, and boss Paul Jewell would have had to do some reshuffling had de Vos not been available.

First team coach David Lowe said: "Jason got a knock on his knee at Plymouth but we think he should be all right for this Saturday."

Lowe also reported encouraging news concerning the other players on the club's casualty list.

Breckin, Scott Green and Ged Brannan are all making progress after time on the sidelines, and could be ready for a return to action before too long.

Summer signing Breckin underwent clean-up surgery on his knee earlier this month, while Brannan has been out for a month with a pulled calf muscle.

A groin strain has hampered Green in recent weeks, restricting his time on the pitch.

Lowe said: "All three lads are making progress in their recoveries, although this weekend looks too soon for them.

"Brecks' operation went fine and now he is at the rehabilitation stage with the physios.

"He had a bit of wear and tear in the knee and the surgery was a case of flushing it out."

Lowe hopes at least one of the injured trio could be available for a run out next week.

Latics have two midweek fixtures – Tuesday's LDV Vans first round clash at Notts County and Wednesday's rearranged reserve team fixture at Chesterfield.

"It's a case of wait and see with them, and we will see nearer the time how we play it," added Lowe.

Meanwhile, club officials expect another big crowd for Stockport's visit on Saturday.

Latics' last home game against Cardiff a fortnight ago attracted an attendance of more than 8,000.

With Jewell's side unbeaten since the end of August and occupying second place in the table, it is hoped a similar size crowd will turn up.
