De Vos & Dinning: Both scored in the 3-1 victory over Notts County on New Years Day
He felt the performance in the 3-1 home victory was as good as any during his 18 months in charge at the club, labelling it as "excellent."

Goals from Tony Dinning, Jason de Vos and Andy Liddell eased Latics to the three points and lengthened the gap over the chasing pack - Cardiff could only manage a draw with Swindon while Bristol City lost at Wycombe.

Jewell said: "I enjoyed watching the game because I thought we were great - from start to finish we were excellent.

"Since I've been here that is as well as we have played, as good as the win against Stoke although we took more of our chances that night.

"Coming up to half-time I just had a feeling it was going to be one of those days because we hadn't scored.

"But then Tony slid the first goal in after the Duke's shot had hit the post and it was the little bit of luck we certainly deserved."

Jewell revealed that he had to console his defenders in the dressing room at the final whistle after they let in their first league goal in over 14 hours of play.

That came from the boot of County striker Mark Stallard in the fourth minute of second-half stoppage time.

"It's testimony to the lads here that the back four were a bit gutted we conceded a goal but that run couldn't go on for ever," said the manager.

"I told them that it hadn't cost us any points and the longer it went on, the more people would want to talk about it.

"We just need to go out there now and start on another run like that."

Yesterday's game saw striker Liddell restored to the attack in place of Neil Roberts.

A torn calf muscle had sidelined him from the beginning of November until Boxing Day, and since then he had been among the substitutes.

Explaining the change, Jewell said: "Robbo has been a bit unfortunate but I just felt he had looked a bit jaded.

"It was a rest for him rather than being dropped and the breather won't have done him any harm.

"Lids couldn't complain about not being in the side before now because we were doing well.

"But I thought this was the right time for a run out, although I didn't want to give him the full 90 minutes with the pitch being heavy and risk him pulling his calf again."

Jewell also had a word of praise for skipper de Vos who played despite suffering a painful foot injury in Saturday's win over Swindon.

"Jason deserves credit because on Saturday we thought he might have broken his foot," said the boss.

"He had it X-rayed on Monday and got the all clear so that was some good news."
