Great Scott

Green terminated the remaining few months of his contract in order to join Wrexham until the end of the season.

Until his departure he was Latics' longest serving player having arrived at the club in 1997 from Bolton, and de Vos says his presence will be missed by the squad.

The Latics captain said: "Greeny did a great job for this club and he was a larger than life character in the dressing room.

"He will be missed and all the lads here wish him well for the rest of the season down at Wrexham.

"Unfortunately in football's current financial climate, good things have to come to an end and Greeny has had to move on.

"But the speed he has got fixed up shows just how highly he is still rated in the game."

Green met with Latics officials on Thursday to discuss his future, and with no contract on the table for next season, the club agreed to his immediate release.

He now hopes a regular stint of first action at the Racecourse Ground will earn him a longer contract at Wrexham or elsewhere.

With his last league start in a Latics shirt coming against Oldham two months ago, Green admits he feared becoming a forgotten man in the reserves.

And as most clubs are tightening their financial belts, the 33-year-old didn't want to get caught in the summer rush of players pouring on to the Bosman market.

Green said: "My last league game for Wigan was just before Christmas.

"They told me they would not be renewing my contract, and last week, Paul Jewell rang me and asked whether I would be interested in joining Wrexham.

"It was time for me to make a decision whether to stay at Wigan until the end of the season or move on.

"People tend to forget you fairly quickly in football and I really wanted to carry on playing.

"I've never played in the Third Division before, but I've played against Wrexham a few times for Wigan and always thought they were a team who liked to play football the way it should be."

Latics fans intending to travel to Wycombe on Saturday can get £2 knocked off the admission price if they buy tickets in advance.
