Cup tie a dream for Mitch

Mitchell :: Can't wait for the City game
The 21-year-old midfielder was on City's books for two years before joining Latics as a trainee.

Now a member of the first team squad at the JJB Stadium, he hopes to see some action against Kevin Keegan's side in the televised clash on November 5.

Mitchell told the Evening Post: "I'm a Blue and quite a few of my mates will be watching from the stands when we play them.

"I was at City as a schoolboy between the ages of 14 and 16 before I came here to Wigan.

"At the time I left, I was a bit gutted, but I'm glad I'm here now.

"Not many of the lads with me at City made it through the ranks, and I think there is only one lad there now and he is nowhere near getting in the first team.

"It was better coming to Wigan because I ended up getting first team football."
The Denton-based lad has been in and out of the first team picture at Latics this season after getting an extended run towards the end of last term.

He started four games last month but has been back on the bench for the past three games following the return of the more experienced Tony Dinning from suspension.

Mitchell has not complaints, though, about his current absence from the starting line-up. He said: "The gaffer pulled me to one side before the game at Barnsley the other week and told me he was happy with the way I had been playing.

"But he had decided to give Tony a game over there because he was a different sort of player.

"Tony has gone in and done marvellously, and we have been flying as a team recently.

"We took West Brom apart, despite them being a Premiership side, while we also played well against Cardiff.

"At the moment, the gaffer is dipping my toe in the water with a few games here and there.

"I had a good run in the team last season, and that proved to be good experience for me."

Competition in the Latics midfield for Mitchell and company could be further increased soon by the return from injury of Peter Kennedy.

The Northern Ireland international, out of action for six weeks with an Achilles tendon injury, took part in a full training session on Monday as part of his bid to regain full fitness.

Latics players will wear black armbands at Plymouth on Saturday as a mark of respect to vice-chairman Duncan Sharpe who was found dead on Monday.

A minute's silence is also expected to observed ahead of the next home game against Stockport on October 19.
