Big Game Hunter

The 3-1 win at the JJB Stadium was one of the shocks of the second round of the Worthington Cup.

But Latics totally deserved it as they made their ooponents look anything but top flight.

Ellington was on target after 31, 61 and 80 minutes.

Perfectionist

It was his first treble as a Wigan player, adding to the three he claimed for Bristol Rovers last season before his £1.2million transfer.

But the perfectionist still didn't think it matched up to the hat-trick he hit for Rovers in January when they dumped the-Premiership Derby out of the FA Cup!

Ellington :: Hat-trick hero
Ellington said: "It was right foot, left foot and a header, so thats a good hat-trick.

"The first came from a cross which Matt Jackson headed back across goal and I instinctively hit it with my right foot.

"For the second, Tony Dinning had a shot from the edge o the box wich I went to follow in.

"But it came right to me, so I controlled it and shot with my left foot.

"The third came after they (West Brom) had been messing about with the ball in the corner.

"Gary Teale crossed it and I was unmarked in the box to head it in.

"I wouldn't say it was as good a hat-trick as the one I scored against Derby - I liked the third goal I scored there."

It took his tally for the campaign to eight, one ahead of Andy Liddell who sat out last night through suspension.

Ellington felt Latics were well worth the win against West Brom whose side showed nine changes to the one which played against Blackburn on Monday.

Ellington added: "We worked hard against a Premiership side and it is great to get a win.

"Whenever we played against good teams who like to pass the ball, we raise our game and play good football.

"We're making good progess, and while at the start of the season we only played in spells, we're now able to sustain it.

"Hopefuly we can carry this win into Saturday's game with Cardiff - that has all the makings of a good game."

Latics manager Paul Jewell said: "I felt we played as well as we have done all season, and we worked hard in all departments.

Pleased

"It wasn't West Brom's strongest side out there.

"But they are still Premiership players and we can't do anymore than beat the opposition put it front of us.

"I was pleased for Nathan, although it was a good performance throughout the team.

"We brought him here to score goals and he can only get better.

"Now we turn our attention to Cardiff, and that is all that matters to me."
