The petition, posted on www.openpetition.de, had attracted more than 5,500 signatures by Thursday morning
"After several proposals on social networks we start herewith a petition to direct the attention of HSV (Hamburg) to a transfer of the Northern Ireland international Will Grigg," the petition said
The petition said Grigg had a market value of 1.5 million euros (£1.23m) and would probably "bring in that much several times over in merchandising"
The 24-year-old scored 25 goals in Sky Bet League One last season
Hamburg finished the season in 10th place in the Bundesliga
