The players agent, Sigi LEns, earlier in the week confirmed that his agent had agreed personal temrs with Spanish club Espanyol, but the two clubs have yet to agree a fee for the AZ Alkmaar midfielder.

Reports in Holland now claim that the Latics have made a better offer for Landzaat, and have offered the 30-year-old a three-year-deal.

It remains to be seen whether Landzaat would be interested in a move to Wigan and Premiership football, though the player have intimated his desire to play abroad next season.

After failing with bids for Johnson and Huth, Jewell has snapped up Crystal Palace defender Fitz Hall and young Polish midfielder Tomasz Cwyka. Jewell now hopes to add Landzaat and Heskey to his squad.
