Wigan Athletic Season Review Part 3

Last updated : 08 June 2009 By Michael Goodman
February

To begin February, Fulham visited the JJB and should have gone back to London with all 3 points. Wigan had chances to steal a goal but Mido and Hugo Rodallega were still getting to know each other. In fairness, Fulham began to take a foothold in the game and dominated. The 0-0 scoreline was not a fair reflection on the game. A second goalless draw followed for Wigan as Middlesbrough held the club when, this time, Bruce and his men were disappointed with the result.

The month ended badly as Chelsea dealt Wigan a harsh blow with a last minute winner at Stamford Bridge. John Terry put Guus Hiddink's side 1-0 up after early pressure from the away team. Wigan did well to keep the score at 1-0 with Chelsea looking to kill off the game and in the 80th minute, Olivier Kapo scored a poachers effort after a cross from Maynor Figueroa. The game looked like it was heading for a draw until Frank Lampard scored a header with only stoppage time to play to steal a win for the home side.

March

West Ham made sure that Wigan continued the bad run of form by beating the home side 1-0 at the JJB. A contender for goal of the season with Carlton Cole finishing off a fantastic team move in a hot tempered game. Cole was sent off minutes after putting the away side in front and Lee Cattermole was also sent off after a lunge on Scott Parker. Lucas Neill was lucky to stay on the pitch before Cattermole was sent off with a horrendous tackle on the former Middlesbrough man but referee Stuart Attwel only brandished a yellow card for the offence.

Wigan got back to winning ways at Sunderland with Ben Watson and Charles N'Zogbia scoring for the Latics. Grant Leadbitter had equalised for Sunderland.Watson scored a volley from outside the area for his first for the club and N'Zogbia added a fantastic individual effort by running half the length of the pitch to score. Back-to-back wins came once again for the club and a league double completed over Hull City. Watson scored 9 minutes from time with a great lob over Matt Duke to keep Wigan within reach of a European place and, more importantly, took the club over the 40 point mark, virtually securing the clubs place in the Premier League for another season.

April

A month of straight defeats made April an unhappy month for the club. a 4-0 trouncing at Everton started the month off badly at Goodison Park. Next cam a game full of controversy. Arsenal were the visitors at the JJB and were 1-0 down after Mido put Wigan in front.

It could have been 2-0 when Antonio Valencia was clean through on goal and was brought down by Kieran Gibbs. Referee Alan Wiley gave the Arsenal defender a yellow card for a straight red card offence which made the home supporters furious.

In typical fashion, from the resulting free kick, Ben Watson hit the inside of the post and Arsenal made their comeback. The 4-1 scoreline was a very harsh reflection for the club in what could of been the first victory over a top 4 side.

The month ended with a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Blackburn Rovers with Rovers 'keeper Paul Robinson claiming the Man of the Match award to demonstrate how poor Wigan had been in front of goal.

May

The last month of the season was quite poor with 1 win and 1 draw in 5 games. A 0-0 draw against rivals Bolton was disappointing especially after dominating for most parts. 3 straight defeats followed once again with West Brom scoring 3 against an in-form Wigan. The game will be remembered by Hugo Rodallega though as he grabbed his first goal for the club.

Manchester United visited the JJB a few days later in the build up to their title defence week. Rodallega made it 2 goals in 2 games with a spontaneous goal, turning Nemanja Vidic to beat Edwin Van Der Sar. The lead lasted until midway through the second half with Carlos Tevez drawing United level. Michael Carrick won it for the visitors 8 minutes from time.

Another disappointing away day came to fans at Stoke who cruised to a 2-0 win in the final away game of the season. Lastly, in what turned out to be Steve Bruce's last game in charge, Wigan totally dominated against an average Portsmouth who were lucky to only conceded the one goal to Hugo Rodallega who ended the season of in decent form.

Another memorable season for the club and with Roberto Martinez looking like he will sign a 3-year-deal on Wednesday, fans will be optimisic that he is the right man to take the club onto the next level.
