Wigan Athletic Season Review Part 1

Last updated : 27 May 2009 By Michael Goodman
It was an up and down season but at last, fans can take a look back at the season knowing they have another season of Premier League football to look forward to.

August

The new season saw Latics travel to Upton Park and come away empty handed. Amr Zaki made an instant impact scoring the consolation goal which was the beginning of a great run for the Egyptian. The first home game saw Felipe Scolari's Chelsea visit the JJB and a fantastic free-kick from Deco gave the visitors all three points.

Latics cruised through to round three of the Carling cup after a 4-0 win over Notts County before a phenomenal 5-0 away victory at Hull City gave Steve Bruce his first 3 points of the season. An Andy Dawson own goal got the afternoon off to a fantastic start and Antonio Valencia, Emile Heskey and an Amr Zaki double saw the travelling fans treated to a great performance at the KC Stadium.

September

After the international break, Wigan began the month with a 1-1 draw against Sunderland. Titus Bramble netted an own goal before the man of the moment Amr Zaki grabbed a deserved equaliser. A second trip to the capital saw the club earn a 0-0 draw with Tottenham and a 4-1 win over Ipswich in the Carling Cup saw Latics cruise into round 4 where Arsenal lay in wait.

To finish the month, Manchester City were the visitors at the JJB with the focus mainly being on Robinho having signed for City on transfer deadline day. Antonio Valencia put Wigan in front with a screamer in the opening 20 minutes before Vincent Kompany drew City level. A huge moment of controversy saw Wilson Palacios go up, then down, in the penalty area, winning a spot kick. Amr Zaki scored and Wigan hung on the beat the billionaires.

October

Probably the worst month of the season with straight defeats. Middlesbrough snatched a 90th minute winner at the start of the month after surviving heavy pressure with no end product from Wigan.

Latics then made the short journey over to Merseyside where it looked like Wigan were going to snatch 3 memorable points but it wasn't to be. Amr Zaki scored the opener before Liverpool equalised through Dirk Kuyt. Zaki then put Wigan back in front with a spectacular scissor kick. Antonio Valencia was then sent off for a second yellow card before Liverpool grabbed two late goals to condemn Latics to another defeat. Aston Villa taught Wigan a lesson at the JJB, winning 4-0 before Jimmy Bullard helped inspire Fulham to a 2-0 win over Wigan in London.
