He said: "We're top of the table in our first ever season in this division, having only been a Football League club for 25, and have lost only five of our last 66 league games. There can't be many records in world football that come anywhere near that.
"However, those facts don't appear to be enough for some people and, although we've only paid for one player since the end of last season, we're still seen as moneybags Wigan.
"I always try and play things down but perhaps it is time I came out and congratulated the players on what they've done and are doing here.
"These players have done fantastic for us and the progress we've made as a club is really magnificent," Jewell told the club's official website.
