The fixture computer through up possibly the best opening game for the Latics with Champions Chelsea rolling into town for the first game of the season.

And Dave Whelan was quick to welcome his Chelsea owner, Roman Abramovich to the JJB.

He said:“He can use my helicopter pad. It’s only 400 yards from the stadium. And he can also help himself to some of our local delicacies. We’ll have one or two pies lined up for him to try and he can take away a bag of Uncle Joe’s Mint Balls.

“My Russian isn’t very good, but I can promise a friendly reception and a nice lunch and I hope he will go away with a nice feeling. It’s amazing that we’re hosting the champions on the opening day when my first match after taking over in 1995 was against Hartlepool in front of 1,452. We’re putting in extra seats at the JJB and will have 25,204 for Chelsea. That shows how far we’ve come."
