Whelan: THAT Observer Interview

Wigan Athletic Chairman: Dave Whelan
Whelan on the crowd situation

"What does disappoint me is the crowds here at Wigan do not get behind us. They are not here. We only had 18,000 against Birmingham. Does this town deserve a Premier League team?

"I can't do anymore. I've dropped the prices and they still don't come to watch us. It's very disappointing when we're fighting like hell.

"We're doing it year after year and their not turning up. It's disappointing when we're playing so well at home."

Whelan on summer spending

"It's always viable [spending £7m on a player]. I will look after him [Bruce]. Steve knows what he wants and what he needs to get in.

"I want us to get into the middle of the league. We've got a long way to go. I think there will be big shake up in the summer. That will undoubtably happen.

"Every boss does it. Steve has got to get his squad how he wants it. I know this is not the squad he wants. It's a squad he inherited.

"We need more players in the middle of the field and we need another striker. I don't think Marlon King has really got there yet.

"Steve's still giving him a lot of scope and we're still hopeful he will make it. But I don't think he's adjusted to the Premier League yet. It looks like we;ll stay up now and I will support him.

"We want to stat in the Premier League - it's where this club belongs."

Whelan on Steve Bruce

"Steve has done a super job. He's got us playing some good football and he's brought in some good lads. I'm really delighted with him.

"Alex Ferguson will win the Manager of the Year because I think Manchester United will win the title. You can't deny Fergie that.

"But for the rest of the league Steve Bruce is right up there - definately. I don't think there's a doubt he's one of the best."
