Dave Whelan: Another "War Chest" is on the way
The former JJB owner has moved to quash rumours surrounding Hutchings future as Wigan manager by offering his support for the future.

Whelan told the Wigan Observer: "I'm absolutely right behind Chris. Chris has taken over from Paul Jewell and it's not an easy job for him.

"Paul Jewell is a very special manager as he proved here. We have to support Chris, but we have to have success as well.

"We had a great start and everyone was excited with the quality of football that we were playing. For the first five games this season we played some great football.

"But then we were very unlucky at Reading, where we should have won. And we should have drawn or beaten Liverpool at the JJB.

"The injuries have really upset the team and upset Chris. We've had some serious injuries - losing Emile Heskey has been a massive blow for us. It will be great to see him back out there."

After criticism from fans regarding the clubs transfer activity in the summer Whelan has vowed that money will be available in January and the club are targeting two midfield players and a striker.

Whelan continued: "The squad is good enough to stay in the league. It's not good enough to get into Europe. That's our ambition.

"We have to build a squad good enough to try and get into the top six. Now the intention is to stay in the Premier League - that's priority and we have to work at doing that.

"We need players in midfield and we need another striker. I would say it's inevitable that we have to sign more players in January. It depends what the boss [Hutchings] says on how many he wants and what the injury situation is."

After reading about the so called "War Chests" of the past, supporters are sceptical as to whether the funds will be spent in January.

There was however a message for supporters ahead of this weekend's game with Chelsea. Whelan added: "We were poor against Portsmouth. We've got to get back to the starting line-up we had at the start of the season. We want the crowd to stay with us and get behind us again."
