Whelan gives his latest on contracts and the old bill

The JJB supremo had a harsh message for the outgoing Jason Jarrett. Whelan said: "We offered Jarrett more money than Nowich and on top of that he would have been getting appearance money. But he had big doubts about getting into the Wigan team - he questioned his own ability."

Jimmy Bullard
Jimmy Bullard and Nathan Ellington meanwhile are two of the current squad who's contracts have less that 12 months to run. All parties involved are keen to rectify the situation with extensions to those deals already on the table.

However both players are unhappy with the deals that they have been offered.

Chairman Dave Whelan said: "When they come in to me and say they want £20,000 regardless of ig they play or if they don't, they aren't going to get it.

"I'd much rather pay them £8,000 or £10,000 basic a week and then a further £10,000 or even £15,000 in appearance money.

"That will then say to them that the message here is, 'you've got to get on that park and you've got to perform on there or you're out'.

"I don't want Wigan Athletic, if we go down, to be paying these guys £20,000 and £22,000 a week. The club will be skint.

"I've got to put the money in and we're about being sensible here. These two have never even set foot in the Premier League. Are we going to give them fabulous wages and then they can't hack it? I don't think so.

"We want them to prove they are good enough to make the step up and then we'll up their contracts accordingly."

"If we can't agree terms with them they will be sold, it's as simple as that. They will be sold whenever Paul feels it right to let them go. They are worth too much to us to allow them to walk away for nothing at the end of the season.

"We will not have anyone in this squad who will be allowed to run their contracts down. We know there will have to be some negotiation and they don't want to leave here. But sometimes the agents who advise them get the wrong idea.

"They get too greedy and just want to line their clients pocket. They come to us and say 'we want that' and we've refused.

"We've told them what we'll pay the, and they've got to earn it by going out there on the pitch through appearance money."

Whilst with reagrd to the fiasco being presented by the Police, Whelan said: "I am not rising to these bully-boy tactics. If Greater Manchester Police are so insisten that I owe them this money then they should take me to court.

"If someone owed me £270,000 I would send them a court summons and take them to court. Let's get this matter sorted once and for all. Let a judge decide who is in the right.

"If he believes Wigan Athletic are wrong over this then I will pay them the money they say they are owed.

The Latics were presented with a dealine of the 1st August to have paid the bill, otherwise the GMP will withdraw policing for the JJB Stadium. As a result, games would have to be played behind closed doors, or in a different borough.
