Whelan frustrated with Martinez hold up

Huw Jenkins, Swansea City chairman, decided at the 12th hour to request money in compensation for the transfer of Martinez's backroom staff.

No agreement with the Latics could be reached and Jenkins refused to budge. His decision is that of a man who is disappointed to be losing his manager but cannot face it.

What Jenkins and Swansea will benefit from holding the deal up is unclear as the Latics refuse to pay the amount requested.

When all is said and done, Martinez will have his backroom staff at the DW Stadium as the new man at Swansea will want to bring in his own staff.

Anyway, chief executive Brenda Spencer said: "As everyone knows Roberto was his (Whelan's) number one choice. To get Roberto to sign on the dotted line is what everybody wants, including Dave Whelan. He's disappointed and frustrated.

"We have done the deal with Swansea for Roberto. We had not spoken about other staff with Roberto until we met that night. I had a meeting with him along with the chairman. That's where he mentioned staff he would like to bring along.

"A couple of the staff he wants to bring are out of contract so there is no issue there. Two of the staff he wants to bring are under contract. We hope to get something sorted certainly by early next week. I would just say to the fans to hold on tight and keep their fingers and their toes crossed."

Whilst Whelan himself has commented that he is frustrated with the delay but Roberto will join Wigan Athletic.
