What has happened? Who should we buy?

Last updated : 08 December 2003 By Paul Farrington
Off course we have not become a bad side. The players look fatigued and maybe that is a result of playing so many games and having such a small squad. This is why I have compiled a list of players who I feel would be good additions to the squad. Please let me know what your opinions are.

My Shopping List (If I was Paul Jewell)

Carlos Edwards - Wrexham

The flying winger has already been linked with the Latics and he would be a wise move to add much needed width to the Latics team with only Gary Teale having natural width in his play.

"It's flattering and I've always wanted to go as high as possible for myself and my family, but I'm completely happy at Wrexham," Edwards told the Daily Post.

"The rumours are not affecting me. I'll stay here as long as they want me.

"There's always going to be speculation when you're playing well, but all I care about at the moment is waking Wrexham out of their slumber."

Glen Little - Burnley

He has been sent back to Burnley after an unsuccessful loan period at Bolton Wanderers. Despite being 29 and an unsuccessful spell in the Premiership, the tall winger would be a welcome addition to the Latics squad.

He had a superb game against the boys when we visited Turf Moor earlier in the season, and would add some skill and creativity to the forward play.

He would also be available at the right price with Burnley's financial trouble.

Andrew Johnson - Crystal Palace

The striker was the only player to come out of the 5-0 drubbing against ourselves with any credit.

Has good pace, skill and can score plenty of goals, he would add another dimension to our attacking play besides the long ball which has crept back into our play.

May be priced out of a move by the Eagles.

Kris Commons - Stoke City

Not sure how much the 20 year old would cost, but there is lots of potential in this young lad.

A number of Premiership sides were tracking the progress of this young man until he broke his leg. Now fully recovered the midfielder has bags of skill and would play very well alongside a certain Jimmy Bullard.

Nigel Reo-Coker - Wimbledon

It's time to break the bank. Just 19 years old and already involved in the England Under 21 squad.

A storming midfield player with plenty of ability. Wimbledon have got plenty of financial trouble and things are not going as planned in Milton Keynes.

This young man would be top of my Christmas list if I was Paul Jewell.

Kevin Betsy - Barnsley

Fulham plucked him from non-league Woking a few years ago. Never quite made it at Fulham and has joined Barnsley. Can play wide on the right or up front.

Has got plenty of pace, strength and skill and is another one who would give us more options up front.

Matthew Spring - Luton Town

A midfielder of the Tony Dinning mould. Would be very nice too see the youngster join the ranks and take some of the pressure off Jarrett and Bullard who's work load is far too high.

Another one who would not break the bank if we go about things sensibly.

John Stead - Huddersfield Town

Another young lad. Played in the 0-0 draw at the McApline vs Wigan last year, but was wide on the right.

He has now been given a chance down the centre and many teams have been tracking him.

Sunderland have had an £800,000 bid rejected, but it looks likely that £1,000,000 would clinch his signature.

Darren Huckerby - Manchester City

Had to be on this list. If he is available at one million pounds then he must be signed, especially after you look at what he has done at Carrow Road.

West Brom have also been linked, while Norwich City have admitted they cannot afford him.

It may also be worth asking Liverpool if we could borrow Jon Ostemobor for our right back until the end of the season as Nicky Eaden has gone of the boil in recent weeks.
