Webster joining Rangers

The 24 year old centre back was the subject of a confusing transfer to the Latics. The defender joined subject to European employment laws and a fee of compensation has, as yet, been undecided.

As a result, the transfer to Rangers may only be a loan deal, and it is expected that the Scottish international centre back will join on a permenant basis come the summer.

Webster has had a difficult time at the Latics. A series of unconvincing performances led to his replacement in the starting line-up.

He joined the club out of shape after his protracted transfer, and never really got up to speed with the Premiership despite his high billing.

Everton and Blackburn were amoungst the other Premiership clubs linked with a move for the defender before he joined the Latics.

The recent arrival of Swedish defender Andreas Granqvist has all but confirmed Webster's replacement in the Latics pecking order.

Today's move would seemingly be an admittance that Scotland is the best destination for Webster to play his football.

The Scottish side are also expected to announce Walter Smith and Ally McCoist as their new management duo following the departure of Paul Le Guen.

It was expected that midfielder Barry Ferguson may move in the opposite direction but he has won the war of wills with Le Guen and is likely to stay with Rangers.
