Webster is currently out for upto six weeks with strained medial knee ligaments, an injury he sustained in his first training session with the Glasgow club.

FIFA however have confirmed that the Scottish international centre back will be ineligable to play for Rangers as a result of his ground-breaking transfer to the Latics.

In a statement, an Scottish Football Association Spokesman said: "The whole issue is with FIFA, they will decide what happens next."

So far as it is understood, Hearts still hold Webster's registration until his transfer to the Latics is resolved by FIFA, and as a result he is ineligable to play for Rangers.

Webster took advantage of a FIFA-adopted EU law which allowed him to join a club outside Scotland provided he gave adequate notice.
