The Latics and Webster have taken advantage of a new FIFA ruling, which allows any player who is three years into a four year contract to release himself of his contract and search for a new club abroad.

It now looks like this long-drawn out transfer saga will soon be completed, despite late interest from Blackburn Rovers, after Webster was registered as a Wigan Athletic player.

Brenda Spencer said on the careful matter: "This is a test case, a new kind of Bosman if you like because Andy is hoping to be the first player to move before the end of his contract, using the new FIFA rule."

"The matter will be conclued soon, it has been a very complicated process but this will be a uniqie transfer."

jewell has revealed Webster is a player he has long admired, and is convinced that all the effort to sign him will prove worthwile: "Andy is a player i think can make a big difference to the team."

"He's a defender who loves to defend, he's fantastic in the air, fearless in the tackle and reads the game very well. He's the right age, and has the hunger and attitude to git in at Wigan."

The move will be officially unvieled to the public after FIFA agree how much compensation Wigan wil have to pay Hearts for the Defender.

Webster has 20 Scotland caps to his name, and will be the third Scottish international in Wigan's squad, and fourth Scottish player in the Wigan squad, along with Steve McMillan, Lee McCulloch and Gary Teale.
