Unsworth knows the joy of survival

The former Everton and Sheffield United player was member of the Toffee's side that stayed up on the final day of the 1994 season with a 3-2 win over Wimbledon.

Valencia: Back from suspension
Now, Unsworth is expecting it to go right down to the wire this season, but he knows the Latics have what it takes to survive. He told the Wigan Observer: "There's no better feeling than when you do win on hte last day and you do manage to stay up.

"We were in that position at Everton throughout the whole season. We had a bad start to the season and never really got out the bottom three or four. It's looking like it will go to the last game of the season again for me.

"It's not a nice feeling when it goes to the last game, but if you have to do it there's nothing you can do about it. We've done well in patches this season. We had that bad spell when we lost eight straight games in the league. But there's a lot of ability in this team.

"We're all men and we've got to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves down and get on with it.

With Arjan De Zeeuw expected to be out for the season with a badly twisted ankle, Unsworth could well have a big say in the relegation fight. He also knows that this weekend's clash with Middlesbrough will have a big say.

Unsworth added: "'Boro are safe so they are playing free of any pressure. They've got good players and they've got nothing to lose and we've got everything to lose.

"It's not a forgone conclusion that we'll beat them on Saturday. It's still in our hands though, and that's the only blessing. I still think it will come down to one win."

And hopefully that win will come this weekend at home to Middlesbrough. Aside from the losses of Arjan De Zeeuw, Chris Kirkland and Fitz Hall, the Latics should have a full strength side to face Gareth Southgate's men.

Antonio Valencia returns from his three game suspension while Ryan Taylor is expected to start at right back with Mike Pollitt taking his place between the sticks.

Emmerson Boyce is likely to partner either Paul Scharner or Matt Jackson at centre half, whilst Henri Camara will make way for either Julius Aghahowa or Caleb Folan up front.
