Michael Kightly is one such player. After starting last season at Grays Athletic, the highly rated Molineaux winger has shown he is more than capable of a step up in class.

Rumours are that he is being linked with a move to the Latics or Roy Keane's Sunderland in a deal worth upto £3 million. It was not so long ago that the former non-league winger was attracting attention from Manchester United none-the-less.

Darren Purse

Cardiff City centre back Darren Purse has been strongly linked with the club over the past week. Tipped to be the successor to Arjan De Zeeuw's number six shirt, the former Birmingham City defender will be going nowhere if you are to believe Peter Ridsdale.

Ask a Leeds supporter to trust that man and you'll see that his words are not worth very much. Here is what he had to say anyway: "Don't believe anything you read - the silly season has started where every player is being linked with almost every club."

Danny Shittu

Watford's giant centre back Danny Shittu is being lined up as another replacement to Arjan De Zeeuw if reports are to be believed.

There is little strength in this rumour at the moment and Watford boss Aidy Boothroyd is known to be a keen supporter of the former Q.P.R. man.

This one has a long way to go if it is to materialise.

Nathan Ellington

A £3.2 million offer is being spouted for the former Latics frontman, currently plying his trade at West Bromwich Albion.

Given that the Baggies are yet to finish their season, and have a very important play-off final coming up in the near future, any talk of an Ellington transfer can be considered little more than messageboard fodder at this early stage.

Should the Baggies fail in their attempt to gain promotion at Wembley on bank holiday Monday, then a much awaited return to the JJB could be on the cards for Ellington.
