Paul Jewell has made no secret of the fact that he believes Wigan must make "six or seven" signings to improve on a brilliant campaign last season.

Andy Johnson: Wigan bound?
Speaking to the official website, brenda Spencer said:"I can confirm that we have made a number of substantial bids for high profile players and that two of those bids have been accepted. We are also busy puruing other targets."

"However, i have learned over the years, and it is even more relevant at this level, that patience is a virtue when it comes to transfer dealings. We have always prided ourselved on being totally professional and we do not believe in revealing names while negotiations are taking place. This is unfair on us and the players involved and can harm any potential deal."

Whilst the club are unwilling to name the players in question, one of those is believed to be Crystal Palace striker Andy Johnson; Palace chairman Simon Jordan confirming last night that an £8.5million bid from Wigan had been expected.

Rumours have been rife about the identity of the second player, although it is believed by most to be Chelsea and German international defender Robert Huth. The imposing defender has spoken about is position at Chelsea and has made it clear his discontent at playign second fiddle to Terry and Carvalho.

Meanwhile, Sky sports are claiming that Tottenham are set to offer £4.5million plus goalkeeper Radek Cerny, who is Robinsons number two at White Hart lane. The Czech international is also third choice two Chelseas Petre Cech and hopes a move away from Spurs will improve his international prospects.
