Jewell said: "Although our move for Brett Ormerod came to nothing last week, we looked like we might have got it back on track a couple of days ago. Unfortunately for us it looks like Kevin Phillips is going to be out of action a little while longer now and therefore Harry Redknapp doesn't want to let Brett go. I understand that and in his shoes I would probably do exactly the same thing because you don't want to leave yourself short of numbers at this stage of the season.

"Because Harry wants to keep Brett it almost certainly means that the deal is dead because we cannot wait around for too long as we need to strengthen. Although we would like to have brought him in, we have got other targets in mind and the situation with these in still ongoing. One of these players is Ade Akinbiyi and I'll be speaking to Tony Pulis about him later today.

"Everyone knows that we are keen to strengthen the squad and I assure you that no-one knows better than I do that we need too as soon as we can. However, that's not to say that I would be frightened about going until the end of the season with the squad that we have now, because the players are good enough, I would just like a couple of new faces to help us over the finishing line.

"The whole place is given a boost when a new face is brought in and therefore it is nice to be able to do it from that point of view too. However, I will still only sign a player if I believe that he is the right one but there are a few we have our eyes on at the moment and hopefully we will be able to do a couple of deals sooner rather than later."

Meanwhile, Paul Mitchell has extended his loan deal with MK Dons for another month, this will be his third month on loan at the Milton Keynes club.

And, Ian Kilford, the former Latics midfielder has been loaned to Kendal from his current club Barrow. The midfielder has suffered from injuries this campaign and is looking to get his career back on track.
