Nicky Forster is one of the targets whom the Latics enquired about. Nicky Hammond, director of football for Reading said, "We had a phone call from Paul Jewell a few weeks ago to enquire about his (Forster) availability and he was told he wasn't available, it's as simple as that.

"In terms of an offer, there was no figure mentioned to me and as I said we told Wigan he wasn't available."

While just yesterday Steve Coppell said, "I had a phone call from Paul Jewell. He asked me if I would be interested in selling Forster for £750,00 and I said no.

"It couldn't really be classified as a formal offer, it was more a conversation about whether I would be interested in selling. I have two or three conversations like that myself each week. Wigan have not been back with a higher or official offer."

Carlos Edwards of Wrexham is another player who has strongly been linked with Wigan. However icNorthWales has reported that despite interest from a number of clubs, there has been no official bid.

While the player himself said, "I don't think there's been any secret that there has been some interest, but I've never let it get to me," said Edwards.

"They're just rumours. No one has approached either myself or my agent in an official way, so it's not been an issue.

"If anything does come about, then of course I'll sit down and listen, but it will take a lot to get me away from Wrexham.

"I've been here for four years and I'm settled.

I'm just concentrating on my form and helping Wrexham get into to the promotion frame. There's no point thinking about anything else.

"To be honest, these are some exciting times at Wrexham.

"Why can't we get another promotion? We came through the Christmas period well and pushed our way into the play-offs. I really believe we can stay there.

"I'm concentrating 100pc on helping us do that. I've got to play well week in, week out. If a big clubs comes looking because I've been performing, all well and good, but it's not going to rule my head.

"In any case it would have to be the right club for myself and my family."

Jason Roberts was the main target however after the Latics had a £1.75 million bid turned down, they then went back offering two and are awaiting response from the midlands club.

Jewell said, "It seems to have come out in the press which I'm not happy about, so I will tell you that the new bid we made on Monday was for Jason Roberts. We are waiting for West Brom to come back to us now but my gut feeling is that they are going to turn the bid down.

"That will be frustrating but we'll have to wait and have that confirmed before working out where we go from here. We'll keep trying even if we have to change iur target but that is something that we'll think about when we have a definite answer from West Brom."

Thats the latest.
