Stam expected broken leg

The Dutchman came on as a substitute for Emmerson Boyce in the closing stages on the game and lasted only a matter of minutes before hobbling off the pitch following a tackle.

The defender was unable to come back on for the last ten minutes of the game as the Latics were forced to play with ten men.

Roberto Martinez has since revealed that it is expected Stam suffered a broken leg.

Speaking to the Wigan Evening Post he said: “We will check Ronnie tomorrow, but it seems it is a broken leg. “He couldn’t put any weight on it, so he will need a scan tomorrow to find out exactly what it is.”

The news is a further defensive blow for the Latics who are already without Maynor Figueroa, Jean Beausejour, Ivan Ramis, and Anolin Alcaraz through injury.

Martinez also revealed that Beausejour has suffered a tear in his hamstring (againt West Brom at the weekend) and that will effectively rule him out for the rest of the season.

“Jean has a tear in his right leg. It will be difficult for him to be back before the season ends,” he added.
