Squad begin Pre-Season training today

Since the last league game of the season against Portsmouth, a lot has happened at the club. Steve Bruce left to take the Sunderland job and in came Martinez to fill the void. The Antonio Valencia saga has ended with the winger signing for Manchester United in a reported £16m deal and Jordi Gomez and Hendry Thomas are now Wigan Athletic players.

Today is the first chance for Roberto Martinez to get a glimpse of the squad and look at what areas are in need of improving. The most obvious position is in attack with only Hugo Rodallega on the books as the recognised striker but Jason Scotland could arrive this week to improve the striking options. Marlon King could be given a fresh start at the club after failing to settle since arriving in January last year as well as Martinez looks to give everyone a clean slate for the new start.

Speaking to the Wigan Evening Post, Martinez said "We are looking for competition for places in every department.

"We are very strong in midfield, but we probably need to strengthen in the wide areas and up front.

"But just as important as getting new players is making sure the players already here are ready for the new season.
"Everyone at the club will start with a clean slate.

"I am not here to make footballing decisions on my own, I will be assessing the decisions that the players make.
"Every player will have a chance to do that."

The first Pre-Season game away at Crewe Alexandra is coming up on July 16th followed by a trip to Deepdale to take on local rivals Preston North End on July 28th. The other confirmed fixture is away at League 1 Norwich City on August 1st which leaves a couple of gaps for a few more friendlies to be confirmed. Hopefully a home friendly can be arranged at the DW as it has been 4 years since a home friendly was played in Wigan with Boavista the opposition in a 1-0 win for Wigan, Nathan Ellington scoring his last goal for the club in the game.
