Sibierski pleased with goal

The 33 year old Frenchman has scored a number of important goals for the club so far this season and was pleased with the congratulations he received from a number of the Chelsea players following his goal on Saturday evening.

Antoine Sibierski is disappointed to have been knocked out the Cup
Sibierski told the Wigan Evening Post: "Wright-Phillips, Joe Cole and Anelka came to congratulate me afterwards, saying I had scored a great goal. That is a compliment for me, and I know I have the ability to score goals like that.

"It's the best goal I've scored since I've been playing in England,
although I got a better one in France. That was six years ago playing for Lens against Nantes - it was a scissor kick from 20 or 25 yards. I have a film of it on DVD at home.

"However good a goal it was against Chelsea, unfortunately we lost the game and that is very disappointing. I think we had a chance of beating them, even with the great players and great team they have, because it wasn't the best pitch to play on.

"Chelsea aren't used to playing on a pitch like that every week and maybe we should have taken advantage. But we made a mistake again and ended up losing the game. Our pitch is tough to play good football on and we have to deal with that, simply try to do the best we can.

"Sometimes you have to play the ball long but you do have to try to play football too even when the conditions don't particularly help. I was a bit surprised to be able to score a goal like I did on the pitch because technically it is difficult to achieve. But the ball was in the air and that gave me a chance."

Sibierski also rejects claims that the fourth round departure from the FA Cup is a blessing in disguise. The former Newcastle and Manchester City man is ready to focus on the league though, starting with Middlesbrough on Tuesday. He added: "Unfortunately we have not qualified for the fifth round so we are going to have to concentrate on the league. Hopefully playing in just one competition can help us.

"The FA Cup is gone now, and we have a big game at Middlesbrough. We have to believe in ourselves there, even though we are away from home. It's important we concentrate more than we have been doing and cut out the mistakes. If we can keep a clean sheet it just means we have to score one at the other end, like we did to beat Derby two weeks ago."
