Selection dilemma for Bruce

Last updated : 11 March 2009 By Michael Goodman

Steve Bruce will have to chose between the experienced Scharner and energetic Watson to come in to replace Cattermole in a big game up in Sunderland this weekend. Cho Won-Hee should be on the bench but will be eased into action as he looks to integrate the South Korean into English football slowly.

Scharner has been mainly used as a centre back by Bruce but when employed in midfield, either by Chris Hutchings or Paul Jewell, he has been a threat in front of goal, something which is problematic for the club recently. Watson is still somewhat of an unknown quantity for Latics fans and is given the time to settle in midfield, Watson could cement himself in the centre of midfield.

Speaking to wigantoday.net Bruce said:

"The fact we're without Cattermole will give someone else an opportunity, hopefully they can grasp it.

"We've got the option of Scharner going in there, and also Watson, who I thought did very well against Boro.
"We don't see Catts again until the end of April because of the way the fixtures fall, so we'll have to keep him busy in that time.

"He has been immense for us this season but has to learn his lesson after doing what he did the other night against West Ham.

"Catts is a tackler and we adore him for that, although he let himself down - there was no need to do what he did."

Bruce sure does have a dilemma ahead of him and if the club gets a decent result on Saturday, Many fans will breathe a sigh of relief knowing Premier League football should be guaranteed for next season.
