At least Martinez can be credited with not substituting the Austrian for tactical reasons as discussed in our article reviewing the City game.
Speaking about the injury to Scharner, the Spaniard told Sky Sports: "We'll assess him over the next 24 hours and we're hoping it is only swelling.
"Obviously he's played three games in the space of week, and sometimes this is the kind of effect you get from travelling and playing international football. Hopefully, there'll be some positive news for us."
Should Scharner fail to recover from injury, many Wigan fans are hoping to see Olivier Kapo given the nod ahead of Jordi Gomez.
Kapo has had a tough time of it with the Latics, but could be a revelation should he find form under the stewardship of Martinez.
The Frenchman also offers a better option in the air than Jordi Gomez. A factor that is of huge importance should Scharner be missing from action.
